1875 – a Young Italian Embarks on a Journey
Our story begins in 1875 with Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa, a 25-year-old adventurer from Geona, Italy. Alfredo Francisco risked everything to seek out his vision of building something extraordinary in Nicaragua, the exotic and tropical country that had occupied his dreams since he’d first learned of it as a child.
The First of Many Visionary Endeavors
Alfredo Francisco first saw an opportunity during the time of the California Gold Rush in the United States. Transport of people and goods from the East Coast to the West Coast during that time was long and dangerous, so he invested in a shorter and safer steamboat route through Nicaragua that not only solved a problem in the U.S. but contributed significantly to the Nicaraguan economy. The route was a huge success!
Alas, it was short lived. News broke of construction plans for both the Panama Canal and a U.S. coast-to-coast railroad. Beaten but not defeated, Alfredo Francisco again set his mind to how else he could build his dreams in the land he loved.
1890 – Flor de Caña is Born
Setting his sights on the bountiful land and rich culture that had drawn him across the ocean, Alfredo Francisco pursued a new vision – of making a rum in Nicaragua, known as the land of lakes and volcanoes, that would become one of the most refined spirits in the world. He sought out the perfect terroir to grow, distill and age such a rum, and found it in the breathtaking landscape at the base of Nicaragua’s tallest active volcano: the San Cristóbal. The fertile volcanic terroir offered mineral-rich soil and water, and a unique tropical climate that would be instrumental in forging an exceptionally smooth rum of deeply nuanced flavor. It was here, near the Pacific Ocean and in the shadow of a volcano, that Alfredo Francisco
began to build his dream.
5 Generations of Innovation, Resilience and Passion Later... a Family Legacy
135 years later, Flor de Caña remains the family’s vision and passion. Mastery of rum making from field to bottle, and the business of sharing that great rum with the world, has been passed from generation to generation through today. Throughout our history and against all odds – a civil war, hyperinflation, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, fires and hurricanes – we have sustained and grown Flor de Caña, remaining a thriving family business dedicated to the same dream as Alfredo Francisco, making Flor de Caña rum one of the most recognized spirits in the world.
At Flor de Caña, we are proud to be a 5th generation family business. Our dedication to craftsmanship and to sharing our exquisitely aged rums with the world is what has helped us achieve this impressive milestone.
